We live in a country where water seems abundant. We have clean potable water available to the majority of us by simply turning on the tap. In the rest of the world, 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. Many of these 1.1 billion people would sell a kidney for potable water or give their life for a supply of potable water for their children. Why then, do we buy bottled water?
There is a perception among some people in Canada that our tap water is suspect. Look at Walkerton where 7 people died when agricultural waste leached e-coli into the water supply or at Metro Vancouver where there was a boil water advisory in November 2006 as a large storm breached the watershed. It looks pretty good to me.
But, where do you turn to if you need clean, potable water? If you are in Metro Vancouver, you can’t take your water from the tap. You have to purchase a bottled water filter that meets the government guidelines. Anyone who regularly uses tap water would be turned off by the fact that it comes from the tap.
There are no government guidelines for bottled water. As a matter of fact, many municipalities in the United States offer no regulations at all on the quality of the water that is used in their drinking water. So, when you buy bottled water, you have no idea what you are buying.
Before we can trust our water supply, there are some things that we need to consider.
o The water that comes from your tap is too polluted for us to trust its purity. That is 1.5 billion gallons of water wasted every day.
o isky tap water is also expensive. Tap water should be affordable. Imagine if every time someone turned on a faucet, they could pump out enough water to fill four average size water bottles. What would that do to the economy?
o The government doesn’t test the water any more. They only test for the Alexander Drainage Authority (ADI) which is the agency that is supposed to test the water. Most of the time, the government relies on the fact that the company will test the water if they have a problem with it.
o The company that you believe is providing you with safe drinking water needs to have a well to supply their water. We realize that everyone has to drink water because life requires that we do too. Why not see this as an opportunity to drink more water and save money at the same time?
o Many of us realize that our water may not be as safe as it used to be. But, we also don’t fully understand why. A report that was released to the public found that more than 80% of the public water supplies are in some type of violation. Often, this is because the water has been mixing with contaminated leads for years, as previously reported.
o If you have ever used your tap and noticed a foul odor or tasted a little odd, you have probably conditioned yourself to think that it is time to kick back and order another pizza. So, why not check your water, not just to see what is in it, but also what is in your well?
o If you check your water, you will most likely find turpentine, chlorine and other contaminates in it. This is because your local treatment facility has not been effective at removing these deadly chemicals from the water, even though they are present in it.
o If you follow the directions for removing chlorine from your tap, you will be able to remove from your water some of the by-products of chlorine, such as dibenta and thiosulfinate. But, this does not remove the other chemical contaminants, including the benzene.
o You may think that your water is already tested for contamination, but in reality, it is not. This is because some operators do not advertize the fact that their water contains dangerous chemicals. And, if they do, they don’t mind getting in trouble with the law.
o You may also not know that 45,000 different varieties of drugs are present in the U.S. water supply. Everyone loses their insurance when they find out their water has a drug in it.
o As many as 41% of the Alzheimer’s disease among those over 65 is believed to be connected to the consumption of contaminated water.
o The best way to remove drugs from your water is to use a water filter. There are many different types of filters and they remove the drugs in your water. iltration systems and GACs are the best bet for removing drugs from your water. The other best bet is to get a home water filtration system that removes chlorine and lead.
